Caffeine addiction...is it possible to go through major withdrawal after you have been "sober" for months

and you drink one or two cups of caffeinated coffee? I have gotten so sick after drinking a cup of regular coffee or diet soda after being without caffeine for a long time. Any help out there?

It sounds like your body is "oeverreacting" to the caffeine you've ingested. A similar thing will happen to addicts when they've been sober for a while and then ingest some drug.

    How does it work?

The last time your body encountered caffeine it had a reaction of XXXXX (I'm using 5 large Xs here to indicate a relatively large reaction.) That's because you'd been using caffeine for awhile and your body knew how to compensate for the drug. You were used to this reaction from your body and it felt normal.

Now, after abstaining from caffeine, your body has the same reaction. . . but, unfortunately, your body is OVERcompensating for the caffeine. It's the overreaction that's making your body sick.

In my psych classes, this is referred to as "Classical" or "Pavlovian" conditioning. It's a form of learning your body does.

probably because you're body hasn't processed it in a while......same thing has happened to me with coffee as well as with cigarettes......in addition you'll notice that it tastes alittle different since you haven't had it in a while and that might be why you get sick
